"This plucky middle American chronicle, starring an unsinkable, relentlessly resourceful mother and her Madison Avenue-style magic, succeeds on many levels -- as a tale of family spirit triumphing over penury, as a history of mid-century American consumerism, and as a memoir about a woman who was both ahead of her time and unable to escape it."-- The New Yorker, "This plucky middle American chronicle, starring an unsinkable, relentlessly resourceful mother and her Madison Avenue-style magic, succeeds on many levels -- as a tale of family spirit triumphing over penury, as a history of mid-century American consumerism, and as a memoir about a woman who was both ahead of her time and unable to escape it."--The New Yorker

A quick and fun read of how mother of ten and wife of dysfunctional spouse holds family together by winning jingle contests. And it's all TRUE! The author is the daughter of 'the prize winner and writes in a very engaging manner. Gives real insight into small town mid-west life in the '50's If you buy it and like it, suggest you try Pull Me Up by Dan Barry and Turbulent Souls by Stephen Dubner.

A very enjoyable, "feel good" book! Even better, it is true! You will find yourself inwardly cheering and being happy for this woman and her family.

This was THE BEST book I have read in a long time. You get a very good feel for the people in this true story, written by Terry Ryan, one of the kids. You want to have this family for neighbors. (except for the pesky rooster!) It makes you miss a more innocent time gone by.

I bought this book to read for my Book Club. I found it very enjoyable. It was at once heartbreaking and funny. My only gripe is that I would have liked to know more about the personal lives of the 10 children in the story after they grew up.
