  • Second time around

I read this book over thirty years ago and loved it. I felt that I was living in that time, in that town. I knew the characters and was part of the literary group. Re reading it is a joy. It is as absorbing as it was the first time. The historical context is so well integrated within the plot that the reader can't help but identify with life after the Civil War. Nevertheless, it is the characters that make their way into the readers' hearts. Utterly believable and endearing, they become friends whose lives we care deeply about. Once you get into this book, plan on devoting most of your time to it. You just can't put it down. You can't put it down.
