About this product

Product Information

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining , in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining ) and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmlessmostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the "steam" that children with the "shining" produce when they are slowly tortured to death. Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father's legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant "shining" power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes "Doctor Sleep." Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan's own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra's soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

Great way to catch up with The Shining's Danny Torrance

great book excellent way to catch up with The Shining's Danny Torrance compelling story and characters the True Knot will make you will love to hate them and want to be see get what they deserve Best young female heroic character since Maddie in Coen's True Grit some sense of great depliction of characters human and super human development I am a "constant reader" of Stephen KIng and enjoyed this book very much highly recommended but if you do decide to read this do yourself a favor and read KIng's The Shining (don't settle with just watching Kubrick's film) and his son Joe Hill's Nos4a2, very highly recommended

    Boring

Boring and unrealistic even for 'fantasy'. I think this is one of King's worst books (even worse than The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon). It was so boring, I threw it in the recycle bin. I couldn't even finish it and that is unusual for me.

  • One of the best visceral descriptions of battling evil and addiction; grand

I am a Stephen King complete collector. I have read all of his available works from limited novels, extended versions, unedited editions, short stories, screenplays, and only available on audio CD's. Doctor Sleep, was a great break-neck pace, horror tour de force. Following right after the destruction of The Overlook, Doctor sleep follows the roller -coaster ride life of Danny Torrance; as he tries to battle his genetic predisposition to alcoholism and the special nightmares and benefits of being able to SHINE. It is in my opinion one of King's strongest most heartfelt novels since The Dark Tower cycle and Duma Key. It read fast, I tried hard to make it last into two weeks of treasured reading but it is truly gripping. With empathetic characters and descriptive atmosphere of the ...
