PRAISE for THE BIRTH PARTNER   "Penny Simkin shows how giving support in childbirth is not only a matter of helping a woman through labor and delivery--important though that is--but also of enabling her to cherish a meaningful memory of birth." - Sheila Kitzinger, author of Rediscovering Birth and The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth   "A clearly written book that describes what really happens in our maternity units. I recommend it highly for both parents and a supportive friend." - Marshall Klaus, M.D., author of Bonding, Your Amazing Newborn and Mothering the Mother

  • Great Book for new Dad

Watching your wife in pain, not being able to do anything. Be prepared with a manual at your side why its all happening, I didnt want to distract my Doctor with my questions, my wife was really going at it. Having a manual right there, with all the info, plus suggestions and better understanding of what's going on. My wife was 2 weeks early, when her contractions stopped, but her water broke, the IV went in, and the chemicals started to flow, what do they do? Its right there on page XXX. As we were told about potential difficulties, I wanted to know percentages and things like that, open to page yyy. REALLY made it easier for me, which in turn being strong and educated, made me a figure of stone for my wife during this wonderful but exhausting time. I would recommend it to all new dad's ...

  • The Birth Partner....Highly Recommended!

This new 3 edition is a great book to have! I am a Doula and this book was part of our required reading to get started. I have the 2nd edition already and decided to purchase the updated version! This book is awesome for expecting parents AND their partners. It tells about common happenings in labor/birth and positioning along with comfort measures, common procedures and pain medication usage/side affects during labor. I find this book accurate and informative. I take it with me on my births and I have also "ear marked" key pages that I use (as a doula) often. I also found this book very helpful as a reference for my last child (born 5 months ago). In closing, I recomend this book and will continue to do so! Penny Simkin knows what she's talking about!!!

  • Wonderful for dads!

I bought this book for my husband and I to read before our HBAC (homebirth after cesarean). Very detailed! My husband did amazing throughout my LONG first labor but it's great to read to help understand things and for him to be a bit more prepared.
