About this product

Product Information

Who set out to kill the members of the church? On April 27, 2003, in the hamlet of New Sweden, Maine, Walter Morrill was sipping coffee in the fellowship hall of the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church. Within 12 hours, the kindly old man was dead. Fifteen other members of the congregation fell gravely ill. Ruled a homicide, the largest criminal arsenic poisoning in U.S. history spread whispers of fear through this peaceful town. Which one of their close friends was the murderer? Panic and suspicion gave way to bizarre accusations of conspiracy, revenge, and blood feuds. It would also expose a sinister town secret-buried years before on a frozen winter night in 1997. Who was next? What would unfold in New Sweden was a real-life murder mystery worthy of Agatha Christie-but far stranger than any fiction.

  • A Bitter Brew

This is a book about arsenic poisoning at the Gustaf Adolph Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Sweden, Maine. This book gives great insight into the lives and conflict in New Sweden’ Lutheran congregation. Lester Beaupre’s account of his suffering added an understanding from the victim’s view. More detailed was needed to provide more insight into Danny Bondeson. The book ran out of steam and left many unanswered questions. An example, was Elvie Johnson’s murder. Although it was very terrifying to my mother who lived close to Elvie, it was not very relative to the story. Although I now live far from New Sweden, I bought this book because I live and attended school with the victims and murderer. Overall I recommend this book.

  • THUMBS UP!

This book is a riveting account of the little church in northern Maine where someone poisoned the church coffee, killing one person and almost killing a bunch of others. I've never read a book like this--combines drama, religion, history, and black comedy. I give it two thumbs up!
