Great kit
Great sounding kit!!! Toms can be tuned low as in rock and rolly or of course they are excellent with a jazz tuning and coated heads,, my only complaint is that the snare is LOUD—. I’m serious,, it’s way louder when struck with the same force than my other snare drums.——- why this is I can’t really imagine either—-

Exceptional drums, but with some of the worst drum hardware “brain cramps” in history.
A bit of background, first... I began playing the drums in 1969, gigging in ‘75, and have owned, performed, recorded & taught on Maxitone, Rogers Memriloc, WFL, Ludwig, Tama (Superstar Birch, Starclassic Maple and Stagestar), Purecussion/RIMS Headset, and Pearl (Rhythm Traveler) kits before buying this one, and I’m the son of a retired professional concert pianist, so my perspective isn’t that of a newcomer... Although Sonor goes out of its way to stress the “German design” of these sets, and intentionally never mentions that these drums are made in China, they are. Even so, the shells on these drums are so well made that they will absolutely astound you with their tonality! The 12 lug 10x7” mounted tom and 16 lug 13x12” floor tom sing like drums an inch or two larger, and their 45 degree ... A bit of background, first... Even so, the shells on these drums are so well made that they will absolutely astound you with their tonality! The 12 lug 10x7” mounted tom and 16 lug 13x12” floor tom sing like drums an inch or two larger, and their 45 degree bearing edges are so crisply cut, and crowned so beautifuly that they’re literally as sharp as butter knives, and tuning them was as easy and straightforward as could be. Sweet!! The 16-lug 13x6” snare and 16-lug, 16x15” bass drums’ edges are similar, but finding their tonal “sweet spots” took considerably longer, and unlike my maple Tama 13x5” and birch Yamaha 14x6”ers, the 13x6” maple snare that comes with this kit was harder to dial in. Ditto for the bass drum, which feels and sounds uncontrollably “woomy”, (instead of “boomy”) for some reason. Perhaps that’ll change if I give the interior a half dozen coats of lacquer and a felt strip? (Only time will tell. I’ve also tried swapping out the Chinese Remo head with a Pinstripe, an Evans G2, and its current Evans Hydraulic on it, but I still haven’t found that combo of warmth and impact “thump” I’m after. Again, I’m experimenting, and happy to be doing so.) But it’s the hardware that’s really pissed me off about this set, and inspired me to lop off two stars (something I have never done before), and contemplate a third. Just try to imagine this, if you will... You go to set up the bass drum, but unlike literally every other non-attached bass drum spur ever made, there isn’t enough clearance between the spur mounting hardware and the nearest lug for the spur to either swing or slide into place, with the attached memory locks properly attached! Instead, you’re forced to unscrew the tension screw much, much further than on any other manufacturer’s hardware, and then sort of shimmy it into place, unavoidably smacking that adjacent lug with the memory lock, each and every time. Clearly, not designed by anyone who’s ever had to setup and break down a drum kit for frequent gigs! Then, you go to slide the vertical tomtom support tube into the bass drum, right? Nope! If you do that, even with both spurs properly set, the bass drum will fall over, because the same engineering genius who brought you the bass drum spurs also saw fit to mount the bass drum riser receiving hardware at the bottom center of the opposite end of the drum, and if you don’t first attach it, everything topples over! Alright, so you pull that thing out and install it, but there’s no memory collar on it, so there’s no repeatable way to place it at the right angle twice in a row, so you’ll need to futz around with that to get it right... but once you do, and go to slide the tom tom onto its tapered-end hexagonal mounting rod, you’ll discover the ultimate gift from the “genius” behind the CAD program that brought you this fine piece of hardware: when you tighten the oversized thumbscrew that holds the Tama-inspired ball/L-rod in place, and then slide the tom tom’s L-rod receiver bracket (with equally large thumbscrew) onto it, you discover that there simply isn’t enough room to tighten the second thumbscrew down to hold the tom onto the L-rod, because the ball-tightening thumbscrew is in the way!!! (If you’ve ever seen one of those “You Had One Job” memes, it’s exactly like that.) In the end, I had to drive over to a Home Depot and find a black iron metric M8 / 1.25 x 16mm socket-capped machine screw to make it work, because after repeated tries with this idiotically-designed hardware, there simply wasn’t any other way to get the damned thing to work, except using a Tama single tom mount on the Sonor set. Oh, and just to round out the perfect drum hardware holiday: the recessed keyways on the receiving hardware that the memory locks on the mountings fit into are significantly larger than the memory locks’ tabs, so instead of locking the drums exactly into place, each time that you setup before a show, they just go into the general vicinity (but I have zero confidence that they’ll remain in place for the duration of any gig that requires more than the lightest of brushwork). All in all, some of the finest drum shells I have ever played, held together with the most poorly considered hardware I have ever encountered! Yes, I’d still suggest buying it, but you need to know that the hardware’s only “meh”.
