About this product

Product Information

The most dramatic unsolved mystery of the century. In July 1918, Tsar Nicholas II, his wife, and their five children were shot by Bolsheviks in the Russian Revolution. In February 1920, a woman who many believe was the Grand Duchess Anastasia was rescued from a canal in Berlin. In July 1992, the body of Anastasia, the youngest grand duchess, was found to be missing from her family's grave. This is the story of what happened in between.

  • A Good Read

After all the controversy of this family this book offers a compelling view point. This is a true story. I think most authors would find it hard to come close to this in fiction. Read it for yourself to see what you believe to be true. Was she Anastasia? According to DNA results many years after this book was written it was determined that she wasn't. Even that makes the reader question. First of all, after all these years would the remaining Romanoff family members admit that the DNA results was right or wrong? Money and property was involved during the actual events of the book. Money makes strange bedfellows. If this woman were Anastasia the money and properties belonging to her father would be all hers. And today as then the other Romanoff family members would have thrown out the Grand ...

  • Anna was Anastasia

I find the whole Romanov history so interesting. Peter Kurth really researched and talked to a lot of people. He actually met Anastasia toward the end of her life. A bit too detailed and so many characters to keep track of, but that’s what happens with a good researcher. I know dna disproved her claim but I think it could have been tampered with to prevent any more claims. Not even sure if there was a lot of money secreted away in English banks. I liked this book which included pictures. The Grand Duchess as a teenager and Anna Anderson definitely look alike!

  • A fascinating book if you are interested in Russian history .

A fascinating book if you are interested in Russian history. The author goes into great detail about the life of Anastasia, who was supposed to have been the only member of the last Tsar of Russia's family to have survived the massacre in 1918. She had an amazingly turbulent life, lived in both Europe and the USA, but appeared to have some serious mental issues. The second half of the book goes into great detail about several court cases where she and her supporters were trying to prove her legitimate claim to the title and the possible wealth that was connected with it.

  • fodder for discussion

Bought this for a book club. The writing didn't flow all that well and was rather repetative. Some amazing facts that made it hard to deny the possibility of Anna Anderson actually being Anastasia, inspite of scientific findings. Kurth fails to include evidence--even what was readily available at the time of writing--which undermines his case, but the evidence he includes is quite persuasive. Our club had a very animated discussion about it.
