About this product

Product Information

The groundbreaking book that explains Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)--and presents a drug-free approach that offers hope for parents--now revised and updated. Does your child exhibit... Over-responsivity--or under-responsivity--to touch or movement? A child with SPD may be a "sensory avoider," withdrawing from touch, refusing to wear certain clothing, avoiding active games--or he may be a "sensory disregarder," needing a jump start to get moving. Over-responsivity--or under-responsivity--to sounds, sights taste, or smell? She may cover her ears or eyes, be a picky eater, or seem oblivious to sensory cues. Cravings for sensation? The "sensory craver" never gets enough of certain sensations, e.g., messy play, spicy food, noisy action, and perpetual movement. Poor sensory discrimination? She may not sense the difference between objects or experiences--unaware of what she's holding unless she looks, and unable to sense when she's falling or how to catch herself. Unusually high or low activity level? The child may be constantly on the go--wearing out everyone around him--or move slowly and tire easily, showing little interest in the world. Problems with posture or motor coordination? He may slouch, move awkwardly, seem careless or accident-prone. These are often the first clues to Sensory Processing Disorder--a common but frequently misdiagnosed problem in which the central nervous system misinterprets messages from the senses. The Out-of-Sync Child offers comprehensive, clear information for parents and professionals--and a drug-free treatment approach for children. This revised edition includes new sections on vision and hearing, picky eaters, and coexisting disorders such as autism and Asperger's syndrome, among other topics.

Reviews
Praise for the works of Carol Kranowitz   " The Out-of-Sync Child  has become the parents' bible to [Sensory Processing Disorder]." -- The New York Times  "This book is great! It is a real contribution to the parents of the many children who are so hard to understand.  It will let parents off the hook of blaming themselves... and will help them get on to the job of addressing the child's underlying difficulties." --T. Berry Brazelton, MD, founder, Brazelton Foundation, Children's Hospital, Boston   "Warm and wise, this book will bring both hope and practical help to parents who wonder why their kid doesn't 'fit in.'" --Jane M. Healy, learning specialist and author of Your Child's Growing Mind   " The Out-of-Sync Child does a masterful job of describing the different ways children react to sensations and integrate their responses to their world. The book provides detailed, practical information that will help parents understand how the nervous system works." --Stanley I. Greenspan, MD child psychiatrist and author (with Serena Wieder) of The Child with Special Needs   "Comprehensive yet easy to understand... helpful tools for parents to promote healthy integration." -- The Exceptional Parent

  • The Out-of-sync Child by Carol Stock Kranowitz

VITAL- that is the only word I can think of when it come to this book! Having special needs children requires parents to be well informed and well armed with understanding when dealing with teachers, counselors and other professionals. The Out-of-Sync Child is a wonderful resource for not only parents but teachers who work with children with Sensory Processing Disorder. With entire chapters dedicated to the areas of life where your child functions, at home and school, the author does a wonderful job of providing real life examples of what to expect and how to deal with the complications that SPD brings. It also contains priceless information concerning the look-alike symptoms and what SPD is and is not, as well as how the SPD child's brain functions. I love this book and only regret not ...

  • Much needed insightful information!

When your 'baby' is unhappy, the world doesn't turn. Just ask any parent of a child with disabilities! It's not until we begin to understand how to help them cope and overcome, that the world begins to turn again. The sun begins to shine when we have an idea that we are not alone and there is something we can do. This book goes into detail of what to look for with many different children on all spans of this disability to give you the insight you need and be able to compare the symptoms with your own child. Keep in mind, no two children are alike , whether they have disabilities or not. Our Son, was not covered by one particular scenario set forth in this book, but there were enough scenarios offered that it was all to clear that without the Dr. diag., we would have been able to ...

  • A must read for many parents and educators!

I had already read this book- lended to me by my son's occupational therapist. I needed to have my own copy for reference. If anyone suspects their child has unusual idiosyncrasies that cannot be explained, or that sometimes interfere with "normal" situations - yet you don't think there's a serious diagnosis - I highly recommend you read this book. It may reveal things than can help you equip your child to be more successful for the rest of their life, and also calm any fears that you may have about the possibility of other disorders such as the autism spectrum. It does get a bit clinical at times - and it is a very complex subject matter. Stick with it, because toward the end of the book you will gain a much better understanding about how to cope at home, at school, and in public.
