About this product

Product Information

What's the Matter with Meat? draws back the curtain that obscures the truecosts of industrialized meat production. The book exposes how the industryis expanding worldwide at a rapid pace, with just a few large companiesmonopolizing the majority of the market. This global survey of factory-producedmeat examines the practices of the industry in five major productioncentres: the USA, Europe, Brazil, Australia and Asia. The system generates enormous corporate profits while providing verylow prices to consumers, but has an outsized and often negative impact onsurrounding communities. Katy Keiffer focuses on issues such as labour, genetics, animal welfare and environmental degradation, as well as probingless-reported topics such as 'land grabs', where predator companiesacquire property in foreign nations for meat production, frequently at theexpense of local agriculture. The current industry model is simply not feasible for the future, as ourplanet will soon run out of the resources required to raise animals. A salutary,hard-hitting critique of the meat-producing industry and its harmfuleffects, this book exhorts consumers to resist the lure of cheap meat andencourages governments to foster alternative methods, and the industryitself to amend its practices. This book is not about telling people to stopeating meat. Rather, by exposing current industry practices we can all beaware of the perils of supporting the system; instead of urging people toavoid meat, it proposes that we demand and pay for better meat.

Reviews
Over the course of her well-researched and thoughtfully reasoned book, Keiffer outlines some of the major hidden costs associated with the production of modern, industrial meat, including environmental degradation, animal welfare issues, and labor abuses. While one might imagine from the title that Keiffer's intention is to lay out a vegan critique, she is quick to argue that meat is an efficient and nutritious source of calories that is pleasurable to consume. . . . Keiffer does an admirable job of synthesizing issues ranging from animal welfare abuses to international land grabs. . . . [The book] reads as a measured assessment of the current issues with industrialized meat production., By writing this book, Keiffer didn't intend to stop us from eating meat. Instead, her wish was that we become more aware of the hidden costs of industrial-scale meat production, dominated now by just a handful of multinational corporations. Her well-documented study covers developments in the United States, Asia and Southeast-Asia, Europe, the United Kingdom, and Australia. . . . Keiffer tackles a range of topics including the business of genetics, animal diseases, environmental degradation, and labor conditions., Keiffer has produced a thorough and well researched analysis of everything that's wrong with industrial meat production. This book is for everyone who cares about how meat-eating affects our planet., "Keiffer has produced a thorough and well researched analysis of everything that's wrong with industrial meat production. Dvd arrived quickly and well packaged and taken care of. The item was listed as acceptable and met all of my needs but here's a quick description of what I got: Some wear is visible on the plastic sleeve on the outside of the case. The inside leaflet was still there! The disk has about 3 very notable scratches, although none are bigger than about 2 centimeters. Little to no grime anywhere on the product. Great service!
